Short answer. To get the effects of binaural beats you need to be wearing stereo headphones. The effect only happens when each ear hears a different tone, so speakers cannot produce it at all.
Once the headphones are on, the next question most people have is how long to listen. There is no agreed answer, but the largest research review we found reported that longer listening sessions went with bigger effects [1]. That same review found something more useful: starting the audio a few minutes before a task worked better than starting it at the same moment [1].
As for whether the effect is big enough to matter, good evidence points both ways, and we cover both sides of the debate below.
Do binaural beats work without headphones?
No. Here is what is actually happening.
Your left ear gets one tone. Say 200 Hz, a low hum. Your right ear gets a slightly different one, say 210 Hz. Neither ear hears a pulse on its own. But your brain compares the two signals and creates a third sound that is not in either ear: a slow, steady throb at 10 Hz, which is the gap between them.
That throb is the binaural beat. It only exists inside your head. That is what the name means. Binaural is "both ears," and the effect needs each ear to receive its own separate tone [1].
Now play those same two tones through a speaker. Both tones travel through the air and reach both of your ears at once. They bump into each other before they get to you, so you hear a wobble that happened in the room instead of one your brain made. It might sound pleasant. It is a completely different thing, and none of the research findings about binaural beats apply to it.
So headphones are not a preference. They are the required mechanism to get the impact. If each ear is hearing its own tone, which only headphones can do, the binaural effect is happening. If both ears are hearing the same mixed sound, it is not.
Any stereo headphones or earbuds will do the job. Cheap ones work. What matters is that the left side and the right side play different sounds, which is what "stereo" means. Price, brand, and noise cancelling make no difference to whether the effect happens.
Binaural beats not working? Check mono audio first
If you have headphones on and hear no pulsing at all, the most common cause is that your phone is set to mono audio. Mono mixes the left and right channels together and sends the same sound to both ears. It is a genuinely useful setting if you have hearing loss in one ear. It also switches binaural beats off completely, because now both tones arrive at both ears.
How to turn off mono audio on iPhone or iPad: go to Settings, then Accessibility, then Audio & Visual, and switch Mono Audio off.
How to turn off mono audio on Android: open Settings and tap Accessibility. On a Samsung phone it is under Hearing enhancements. On other Android phones the menu name varies by manufacturer and version, so the quickest route is to type "mono" into the search box at the top of Settings. Switch Mono audio off.
If mono is already off and you still hear nothing, check these:
- One earbud is out of your ear, or one side has run out of battery
- The headphone plug is only pushed in partway, which can cut one channel
- Some Bluetooth speakers and single earbuds are mono by design
A quick way to test it: put both sides on and play a tone. You should hear a slow wavering. Take one side off and the wavering should stop. If it stops, the effect is working.
How long should you listen to binaural beats?
There is no official answer, and anyone giving you an exact number is making it up.
Here is what the research does say. One review pulled together 22 studies covering memory, attention, anxiety, and pain. It found that how long people listened made a real difference to the results, and that longer sessions tended to work better [1]. That gives you a direction. It does not give you a number.
The same review also found that the size of the effect, and even whether it helps at all, changes depending on which frequency is used, how long you listen, and when you listen [1]. That is a fair explanation of why nobody has published a protocol worth following.
In practice, most of those studies used sessions somewhere between a few minutes and about half an hour. Starting in that range is sensible. If you enjoy a longer session, there is no reason to stop. Just do not assume that doubling the time doubles the benefit, because nothing shows that.
When should you listen for the best effect?
If you only change one thing after reading this, make it this one. It is the most useful finding in the research and almost nobody mentions it.
In that same review of 22 studies, listening before a task, or before and during it, worked better than only listening while doing the task [1].
So if you are using binaural beats to get ready for homework, focused work, or studying, press play a few minutes early and let it run while you set up. That single change is the timing advice with real evidence behind it.
While we are on setup: some apps mix white or pink noise underneath the tones. The same review found that this masking was not necessary, and unmasked beats worked about as well [1]. If you like the sound of a noise bed, keep it. You are not gaining anything by adding it.
Which binaural beat frequency should you use?
This is where most guides go wrong. The frequency charts you see online are far more confident than any actual study.
Two research reviews have looked at this. The first, covering 22 studies, found that results changed depending on which frequency was used [1]. The second looked specifically at memory and attention across 15 studies. It reported an overall medium effect, but when the authors examined the studies one by one they found conflicting results, especially for theta and beta frequencies on memory and attention tasks [2]. They said more research with better study designs is needed before anyone can explain how it works [2].
So pick a frequency, use it long enough to notice whether it does anything for you, and treat any chart that promises a specific result from a specific number as marketing rather than science. The generator further down lets you slide the beat frequency up and down, which is a more useful way to explore it than picking a number off a list someone invented.
Do binaural beats actually work?
You deserve a straight answer, and the straight answer is that strong evidence points in both directions.
Reviews that pool many studies together look positive. The 22-study review reported a medium sized, statistically significant effect across memory, attention, anxiety, and pain (Hedges' g = 0.45) [1]. The 15-study review of memory and attention reported a similar medium effect (g = 0.40) [2].
Careful individual studies are less encouraging. In 2022, a research team ran two experiments playing 16 Hz binaural beats to people doing a long, repetitive attention task. In the first experiment, people responded slightly faster with the beats playing. But the difference was small, and their statistical test could not tell whether the effect was real or just noise in the data. When they combined both experiments, they reported fairly strong evidence against the idea that these beats improve sustained attention, either by speeding people up or by stopping them drifting off as the task dragged on [3].
Both of those things are true at the same time. That is where the research currently sits, and it is not something we can settle for you. A reasonable way to hold it: binaural beats are cheap, safe, and easy to try, the pooled evidence suggests a modest effect, and the most careful single tests have not always found one. Try it, and pay attention to whether it actually helps you.
Are binaural beats safe? Side effects and cautions
Keep the volume low. Binaural beats work fine at quiet levels and there is nothing to gain from turning them up. Loud audio through headphones damages hearing over time, whatever the audio is.
If you have epilepsy or a seizure disorder, ask a doctor before using any audio designed to affect brain rhythms. The studies we cite here did not look at seizure risk, so this is a caution rather than a research finding. It costs nothing to check first.
Stop if you feel unwell or uncomfortable. Some people find steady tones unpleasant, and there is no reason to push through audio you do not like.
Binaural beats are not medicine. If you are dealing with an anxiety disorder, ongoing pain, or a sleep problem, this is not a replacement for proper care.
